Nest Thermostat Software For Mac
There are times when you set up a Nest thermostat with a security password, whether you are a parent trying to keep the kids out, or, you are a landlord and don’t want renters to play around with the Nest. The downside to this is that if you set one of these codes up on your Nest thermostat, there is a possibility that you forget the code–or–you remove the Nest device from your Nest app before resetting the passcode. If this happens, you are not out of luck; however, it’s not the easiest process to get the pin code reset.
Recently, I moved to another home and took our old Nest thermostat with us. When I put the Nest back onto the new home’s wall, I was greeted with a 4 digit passcode screen which I did not remember setting. By then, I had already removed the Nest thermostat from the Nest app which made the Nest basically useless at this point. You cannot reset the passcode if the device is not in the app any longer. You also cannot add the Nest thermostat to the Nest app without the passcode. A classic catch-22.

What we had to do was the following (which is not at all convenient).
- Remove the Nest from the wall, which is done by gently pulling the device straight towards you. What will be left is the wall plate where the Nest plugs in.
- You will need a special cord to plug the Nest into a computer. This cord is a standard mini USB (1st gen thermostat) or micro USB cable (2nd and 3rd generation Nest). You may have these cables laying around if you are an Android user. To figure out which Nest generation you have, check here.
- You will need to unfortunately contact Nest support here. The reason for this step is that they have to provide you with a special file that is downloaded from them and placed into a special directory on the Nest thermostat which resets the Nest back to factory defaults, and, eliminating the 4-digit pin code. When the Nest device is plugged into your computer, it should show up as a separate hard drive which is how it allows you to place this magic file onto it.
- This process was pretty quick for me–it took about an hour to contact them via online chat (the easiest way during the Coronavirus situation) and download the file onto the Nest device from beginning to end.
