The processor, or processors, in the Power Macintosh G5 models cannot be upgraded. The processors in all models are mounted on a custom daughtercard with a 300-pin connector. Although this daughtercard does not contain the ROM, it appears that the processor is controlled by Apple ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits),. G5 Power Mac memory upgrade. With updates 10.3.5 and 10.3.6, as soon as I slept the computer the screen would sleep, the HD would sleep, BUT THE FANS RAN. May 21, 2015 Oh you Power Mac G5 lovers, just don't get a single core because my dual MDD 867 MHz 2 gigs ram outdoes my single 1.6 GHz G5 in most areas, which is why its now sitting pretty on my desk. But I would agree to go with an air cooled dual core model so you don't have to worry about the leakage and pumps going out and such with the liquid cooled. Unfortunately, no. Power Mac G5 Tower
I am in need of some performance boosts but can not afford to buy a new Mac right now.
I use my PowerMac G5 for video editing (lastest FCP6), always using ProRes (usually just 422) at 1080p24. I also color-correct with Color and do some film grain compositing with Shake. Sometimes, I bring DPX sequences into Shake and render out ProRes QTs. 99.9% of the time, I am working with media on an external FW800 drive.
I bought my PowerMac G5 at auction quite a while ago and have not upgraded anything except software - I left all hardware as is.
I have attached 'About This Mac' .pngs to share my specs. The Fibre Channel hardware that is installed has not been used by me at all. Is it something I should look into for performance boosts over FW800 drives?
If I wanted to spend $500 on upgrades, what would be the best option..
A) I am crazy to spend that much on a ca. June 2004 computer
B) Install a SSD drive as my boot drive
C) Max out my RAM to 8GB
D) Get my Fibre Channel port and drive up and running (I have the Fibre Channel drive as well, yes)
E) Install an eSATA card to use eSATA drives at 1.5Gb/s
F) Upgrade my video card
G) Combine the best options of B-F that I can afford and balance
H) Buy a slightly younger Mac that is compatible with an eSATA card
Thanks so much everyone!
